(I'm aware that this book is second in the Isavalta trilogy, but it comes first in the timeline, so I read it first. Nyah.)
Avanasy is a sorceror and the teacher to Princess Medeoan of Isavalta. She was also born a sorceress (as well as being the only living heir to the throne), but the last thing she wants is to rule her country. She's besottedly in love with her betrothed, Prince Kacha of Hastinapura and wants him to take care of her. Unfortunately, Avanasy suspects that Kacha is plotting to seize the throne. He tells Medeoan of his suspicions...and ends up getting exiled from the country.
Avanasy travels through the Land of Death and Spirit and emerges in another world entirely...on an island in Wisconsin in 1872. Unable to use magic as easily on earth as he did in Isavalta, he becomes a simple fisherman. But when he spots a woman named Ingrid trying to save her sister Grace from being taken by a ghost, he has to help. After Grace is saved, Ingrid and Avanasy fall in love.
Back in Isavalta, Medeoan discovers that Avanasy is right, and her husband is taking over her country. She manages to flee and makes her way to the country of Hung Tse, hoping that a messenger can get word to Avanasy to meet her there. A messenger gets to Avanasy, and he and Ingrid decide to go back...
I was pretty fascinated with this book, and it's a good tale. Four stars from me.
