Tomorrow They Will Kiss: A Novel
(Disclaimer: this book was sent to me by an agent.)
"Send me the right man," I prayed, "or take away my desire to find true love."
That line sold me right there on this book.
It's the 60's, and three Cuban women from the same village have moved to Union City, New Jersey, and work in a doll factory.
Back in Palmagria, Graciela was the talk of the town. She was always showier and sexier than the other girls, she got married late, to a widower (considered a bad thing)...and then she cheated on him and got thrown out of the house. And don't think the other two local girls she works with, Imperio and Caridad, will EVER let her forget it. Despite their own troubles in life (that could cause plenty of gossip of their own), Caridad and Imperio continue to focus on Graciela and her faults, wonder why she did it, and rehash her over and over. Perhaps they wouldn't choose to be friends (of a sort) under normal circumstances in Cuba, but now the three of them are stuck together like glue in the situation they're in. Meanwhile, Graciela is always determined to do her own thing- go for goals, learn English, and even date again- even if it just gives the other girls something more to make fun of her for. You gotta like Graciela, whether or not you agree with her choices or demeanor.
The voices in this book are lively and fun to read, even when they're gossipy and mean. It's an interesting experiment in telling a story via gossip, compared with the thoughts of the one that they are gossiping about. I don't think I'm writing this review well enough to describe it, but I really enjoyed it. Four stars from me.
You always read the most interesting books. I should stop reading your reviews, adding to my to read list extensively! lol
