This is a fun romp of a book.
At 30, Flynn Daly is still, in the words of Avenue Q, looking for her purpose in life. She hasn't found it, she's tried lots of jobs, and she lives in South Boston in a divey apartment. However, Flynn comes from a more well-heeled family, who decides that They Have Had Enough and they're going to do an intervention and force her to go into the family business. But Great-Aunt Esther recently died, and someone has to go warm a chair over at her small hotel for a few weeks and keep the natives happy until the Daly family can sell off the joint...
Jake Tucker is a former cop turned bartender at Esther's hotel/restaurant. He's a former cop due to him falling for a suspicious woman's ruse that led to evidence being stolen. He's got a big ol' vendetta against local wheeler-dealer skeezebucket Gordon Chase, who he kind of blames for his father's death, definitely blames for his firing, and to top it all off, he was interesting in buying Esther's.
Jake and Flynn meet and hit it off, and go into partnership trying to figure out what Gordon's up to (Flynn easily pegs Gordon as scum). "Crazy women in love" (I wish that had been the title) become a big factor in this one. Oh, and Esther starts haunting Flynn about moving her cow creamer collection. Interesting...
I enjoyed it! Four stars.
