The Outlaw Demon Wails

By Kim Harrison.

Three months after the last book, someone starts summoning Al, Rachel's second-least-favorite demon, and he's out for her head every night. If she hides on hallowed ground (i.e. most of her place of residence), she's fine, but who wants to stay locked up all night? So she has to try to track down who of a uh, lot of people would want her dead enough to do lots of demon summoning.

In other news, one friend turns up pregnant (not by who you'd think) and is in need of assistance...which Rachel can't give due to the Al situation, there's a new hot male witch in town but Rachel's not quite up to official dating yet, the new master vamp in town is a little too invested in Rachel and Ivy, and Trent, well... knocks himself out of the park on good, bad, and obnoxious behavior all in the same book.

Some good news: the Ivy situation gets resolved in a practical and pretty calm way, so yay. Less resolved is the murder from the last book, which surprised me in that a few bits get revealed, but nothing concrete.

That's about all I can talk about without major spoilage. However, I desperately want to MENTION spoilage, so...below the cut it goes. I will just say that in its own way, this is a huge ending, though it's not at all similar to the last book with a big ending. I was up half the night after finishing this one, feeling rather stunned.

Four and a half stars. Whoa.
