I'm an unabashed Carrie Fisher fangirl. Y'all gotta know that before I begin. I went to see Wishful Drinking the one-woman show when it was in Berkeley and it was fabulous. It's the kind of show that had me wishing to do my own show because it looked like it was So Much Fun. And I deeply enjoy her attitude towards having a soap-opera drama kind of life in addition to addictions/bipolarity. She snarks on herself and others brilliantly and I so enjoy it.
For those who never saw Wishful Drinking, this is about 90% (with a few new bits) of the show, put into book form. And while I missed the visuals of Carrie herself, particularly the sex doll she dropped onto the stage, she does helpfully put many of the same pictures from the show in, especially the Hollywood incest board. (For the record: those wondering what photo Carrie had in the diagnostic text, it's Princess Leia. I don't know why that shot didn't make it in.)
It's a brief, snarky rendition of growing up with a Hollywood mom and her stepfathers, an absentee dad who boinks his way around, a stalwart brother, going for the guy who reminds you of dear old Dad, and the guy who turns out to be gay. And what it's like to have your friend die in your bed after a post-Oscar sleepover, and to have your husband write nasty songs about you, and to spend six days awake on drug vacation. And you crack up the entire time. Not to mention quote X-rated lines to the poor bastards standing next to you in line at the grocery store.
My one caveat is that I wanted to eye-roll at this coming out in hardback first, for a short work. Pricing like that needs to at least have over 200 pages of writing in it, methinks. So get it at a discount, which I did.
Four stars. Love her.
