By Ilona Andrews.
Previous book here.
So now Kate's started up her own independent investigation business and hired hew newly-outed-and-out-of-work best friend to join up. But the back of this book is kind of misleading. After a brief incident involving vampires suddenly ending up on the loose--well, that's not really followed up on and we never find out what happened there. Instead, she gets a job to find a lost inventor and his lost invention, which was very top secret and hidden out in the woods. Turns out the device could pretty much destroy life as we know it, and there's a group called the Lighthouse Keepers who are dedicated to destroying all magic. And they can be found infiltrating, well, any group. When one infiltrator infects Kate's ward Julie with Lyc-V virus--and it looks like it will kill her-- Kate needs to resort to an old family ritual that could cure Julie, but with terrifying consequences.
Again, Curran and Kate's relationship continues to be adorable, especially when they talk about her family issues and Curran reveals how much of a priority she is to him. Kate's family issues are interesting in this one, as she finds out some more about her mother's end of the family and allies with them. I also enjoyed the introduction of Ascanio, a new dumb young buck for Kate to break in, who turns out to be not all bad after all.
Great scenes in the book:
- Kate being forced to deal with a situation where one werewolf thought the other was interested in him, and when he broke into her house, she shot him. Kate explains in great detail from her personal experience how one ACTUALLY expresses sexual interest in a fellow and how that is different from a lady just saying hi to you at work. Would that this happened more in real life, because some folks could use it.
- I also wonder about Grendel the dog and what powers he's really got. There's plenty of funny lines and scenes in this despite the deadliness, but I was especially amused by Kate being at a meeting of witches and remarking that without a pet of her own there, she felt left out-- and then Grendel runs in and drops a dead rat on her lap. That dog has TIMING.
- The video Saiman made of Curran's revenge against him...complete with "Kiss From A Rose" soundtrack.
- Curran shredding a cookbook.
It looks like the next book in the series is going to feature Andrea, who's in a social position she doesn't want to be in by the end of this book. I look forward to finding out how she deals with it...but I'll also be wondering about the end of this book too. Four stars!
