This is the first in a series that the authors are writing on their website as a serial, and after they finish a book, it gets published. I got the first one on sale, saw their website and started reading book 4 in progress, so now I want to continue on. Or uh, go back really since book 4 seems to be quite different from the first three.
Dina Demille is an Innkeeper....for a magical inn that houses only extraterrestrial visitors. Her inn, named Gertrude Hunt (I keep wondering why it has a normal human name...is a Gertrude Hunt still somewhere in the place? Or is the inn just named after this lady?), was abandoned at some point and she's been bringing it back to life, but at the moment she only has one permanent guest, a woman named Cardenia that seems to be some kind of galactic dictator/criminal in hiding, but in the inn she seems nice enough other than occasionally expressing her desire to eat others. The inn is located in a dead end area of Texas and doesn't get much business. However, there seems to be some kind of serial killing alien in the area and he and its little pets are attacking the area. That just won't do.
There's a werewolf (note: in this series werewolves and aliens originated on other planets) named Sean Evans living in the vicinity, who is kind of a cranky dude but gets involved in helping Dina deal with the killer alien and his killer pets. Then some vampires from House Krahr arrive, also looking for the attacker. Arland, the House's Marshal, seems like a reasonable guy but Dina is annoyed when he doesn't want to reveal what is going on with his House and the hunt. Unshockingly, there's hints of Love Triangle going on, but so far Dina seems more interested in Sean than Arland. I think I like Arland a bit better than Sean, but so far I'm not really into either one romantically. I think Sean sounds like he's more of the endgame, though.
I don't feel like I am writing this super well today. This is a nice beginning to the world (which is cool!) and the series and the premises of how aliens operate, what it's like to run a magical inn, etc. Dina's parents (at least one of whom seems to not be human) disappeared along with their inn years ago and she still misses them and wants to know where they are, but no dice yet. Her brother Klaus is still wandering the universe and her sister Maud married a vampire and hasn't been in contact since, so there's lots of potential foreshadowing.
Overall I'd give it three and a half stars. I enjoyed it, wasn't mind blown from this one specifically, but I think from what I've read of book four, it's gonna go to some cool places, so I bought the rest of the series.
