Joss killed Wash, the coolest pilot in the 'Verse.
For that alone, I am not particularly caring what he does with Buffy or Angel or BuffGel, or Willow or Piffles the Psychic Werewolf-Slaying Wonder Chimp. Or even Spike, who probably should be re-impaled on one.
My Care-O-Meter? Nil.
His one moderately interesting project (Buffy wasn't that good -- it was men my father's age drooling over Sarah Michelle and all the goth teen queens what drove the show; Angel, well, ya know, he's pretty and just emo enough) was Firefly. I liked the concept. It was cool. Western in Space. It resonated.
I didn't see Serenity in the theaters (yeah, heresy, bla bla bla) because Wash dies. However, I own the DVD, and I'm wading through the show one final time before watching an actually developing character (in fabulous three-dee!) get killed.
And what about Rev. Book?! How much plot development was laying under the layers of THAT character?! Sheesh, Inara would have been MUCH better dead!
He could have let Wash live, but he had to go to his stupid freaking formula, and I'm sorry, but I GOT the Reavers were dangerous the first freaking episode, mm'kay?
Pointless death is pointless and that was a hack thing to do especially since he did it in Buffy and Angel as everyone pointed out.
Sorry, Joss Whedon. Something that could have been a great work ended up another Paint-By-Numbers by you. What a crying shame.

From what I have heard, Alan Tudyk was the cast member most likely to not be returning to any sequel stuff because he's busy. (Same logic that got Anya on Buffy killed off, because she said she'd never return for any post-Buff projects.)
Same thing just annoyed me on Battlestar Galactica, because they just killed off a character I like. Turns out they had to kill him off because the actor has been up for a lot more prominent parts than second banana on a sci-fi show, and it wasn't working out to let the guy out for auditions all the time and still film with him. I do think sometimes the producer has to work with what the actor's plans are too.
As for Book, I think the movie made it pretty clear that Book's backstory was that HE was an operative. At any rate, Book dying never bothered me as much because I wasn't all that into the character.
