"Oh, there's everyone I worked with."
You can't get hired for being funny if you're female and not hot. Bleah.
Actually, though, she's not bad looking when she's not playing someone ugly- rather like Amy Sedaris, I think.
- "She's a great character actress, and character actresses don't need to look like models. There HAS to be something out there for her."
- "If you are not hot, then you can only do the 'ugly funny' roles. Once they run them into the ground, you get written out. Because writing just better parts is so hard."
- "Isn't RD in the same ballpark as Judy Greer, though? Funny, not a bombshell, but cleans up nice? JG seems to get a fair amount of work. Is it a blonde thing?"
- "I don't think this is special to women in comedy, I think just across the board women are not going to get recognized for anything in the media unless they are hot."
- "And she's not alone, Cheri Oteri, who was arguably the funniest woman on SNL during that era has not been getting nearly the amount of work as her counterparts. But if you look at that group of Ana Gasteyer, Cheri Oteri, Molly Shannon, and Rachel Dratch, I wouldn't really call any of them 'conventionally hot.' Recently though, you can see the trend (and I believe it started with Tina) of 'conventionally hot' and funny women on the show: Maya Rudolph, Kirsten Wiig, Amy Poehler, etc."
- "I am a woman pursuing comedy, and was so so excited for the VF issue, and incredibly disappointed. It ended up saying only, "Look, women can be funny AND sexy!" Um, thanks for that insight. Isn't comedy the last refuge for the unattractive person?"

Best Internet Variety Show (and Good Luck Getting Anything Done, Ever) in 2005!

I've got to say, I've always thought that Rachel Dratch is hilarious. She was one of the bright points at SNL, I thought, even though she often got stuck reacting to Will Ferrell a lot of the time. (Though her reactions were priceless, and she was one of the few cast members who wouldn't break up during a scene.) She was totally committed to the scenes she was in -- she's a real pro.
It stinks that she gets passed over because some suit somewhere doesn't think she's "hot"; maybe she'll write/direct/star in some little indie comedy that makes a ton of money -- if there's one thing that these industry jokers value above all else, it's revenue.
