"Ian Scott, 46, now an engineer from Chicago, resolved one New Year's that he'd began a disciplined exercise program while working in South Korea: "Simple enough, right? But I decide that I'll ride my bike back and forth from work. It never occurs to me that I'll be a black man in a probably dark suit riding home at dusk or full dark. I'm really lucky I wasn't killed or at least maimed. But my boss's boss saw it as some sort of plea for help and I got a couple weeks of vacation stateside out of it."
Abel Martinez, 56 and newly retired and in Brady, Texas, once made a different "exercise" resolution -- one that roped in family, too. Martinez, who had always been extremely athletic (running in marathons, biking 40 miles a day), decided he's spend more quality time with the family in the new year: "So, I want to spend some time around the family and especially around Kelly -- my grandson who's 5. He had just gotten a skateboard for Christmas, so I decided to show him how to use it so he wouldn't get hurt. I was on it for half a second before it shot out from under me. It broke his arm where it hit him and my ankle and wrist (broke) when I fell." Grandfather and grandson waited out winter in their respective casts."
