By Shonda Rhimes and Betsy Beers.
This is a giant picture book of pretty pictures from the first two seasons of Bridgerton, the TV series, but also is full of discussions, behind the scenes information, character profiles, interviews, and the like. I'm not normally into Giant Picture Books (this is a library read), but this was very entertaining to read as a fan. It talks about some of the changes from book to film, a fair amount on costuming and wigs, particularly the color schemes, how Queen Charlotte was created for the world and how she's used, Regency history, anatomy of scenes, Lady Whistledown, locations, Covid shooting, etc.
Fun facts:
- The Shondaland people are not used to writing happy endings.
- "We wrote them just as we would a modern character, and then we went back and made it cohere to the period in terms of the mannerisms of speech."
- "We always said that the Bridgertons were a French macaroon and the Featheringtons were citrus fruit." Bridgertons wear silver, Featheringtons wear gold, Sharmas wear rose gold.
- The Duke of Hastings always wears his mother's brooch, butterflies signified the Featheringtons and bees (har) the Bridgertons.
- Charithra loved that Edwina wore her favorite color of pink, but notes that her clothing evolves as Edwina hardens up.
- They used an octagon-shaped room built for the show for 8 different settings--several bedrooms/dressing rooms, the artist studio, and the brothel. Oooh la ha!
- There were a lot of wigs, Cressida was done a la Medusa, Anthony loses his tacky sideburns in season 2, poor Golda had to have a structure set up so she could rest her head between scenes. And Eloise had...a mullet. The actress that played Philippa had to dye the bottom half and the baby hair on her neck to match her wigs, leaving her regular hair with a lot of colors going on. Oy!
Four stars, a great fan read.
