I admit this book was not exactly what I expected it to be? Still pretty good, though.
Fiona St. James and Sam Fox were on a family sitcom, "Birds of California," for four years before Fiona started acting out (I hate to say "Britney style," but it did come to mind somewhat) and the show ended up getting canceled. Fiona became a tabloid staple for her misadventures and scandals, but years later she's cleaned up her act, works in the family business, and acts/directs in theater. So, not too bad. Sam, on the other hand, just had a show be canceled and he's in debt up the wazoo.
So when both of them find out that "Birds" is going to get the reboot treatment, it's kind of a godsend offer to Sam and a "hell no" to Fiona, who declines. Sam tries appealing to Fiona in person, but when she says no to him as well, he goes with it. However, he and she had A Moment and a kiss towards the end of the show, and that old interest rises again, and Sam starts asking her out without ulterior motives.
I had assumed from the title that this was going to be a reboot story along the short-lived TV show "Reboot," but it never quite gets that far. Mostly it's Sam and Fiona dating, hanging out, cuddling, more than cuddling... The relationship is very sweet, actually. And even if it's obviously going to lead to a third act Big Misunderstanding breakup because she's going to think he's dating her to get her to cave into the show (I note that Sam tries to politely deter anyone who calls him up thinking he's dating her to get her back on the show, but when they won't take that for an answer, implies that he's "working on it.") and I wasn't looking forward to that moment, I did like how they worked things out, and enjoyed the end.
However, Fiona's got a deep dark secret as to why she started acting out while on the show, which she doesn't want to tell and Sam is generally too polite and cautious (with good reason) to ask about. This isn't revealed until the VERY END of the book, which is...kinda annoying and weird, especially since you can probably take a guess from Fiona's reaction to a certain person whenever he's brought up/appears that she's distinctly not happy with that guy. I sort of wish that hadn't been dragged out as long as it had, especially since it's something most female readers would guess right off. Truth be told, I'd like to see a sequel to this to find out what happens after Fiona decides to come out with her truth, but who knows if that would happen.
Three and a half stars. I enjoyed this, but the very, very delayed reveal threw it off a bit for me.
