Lynn Johnston separated from her husband. Heck, he met someone else and left her.
"The sudden change in my life has given me a lot more need to focus on my work," said Johnston, who noted that one reason she had wanted to stop doing "FBorFW" was to share retirement with Rod, who had ended his career as a dentist.
Johnston said she reunited Elizabeth with Anthony partly because of advice from late "Peanuts" cartoonist Charles M. Schulz. "'Sparky' accused me of having too many characters," she recalled with a chuckle. "'It's so confusing,' he said. He was right." So bringing back Anthony rather than introducing a new permanent love interest for Elizabeth made sense in that respect."
"Woman, Sparky gave you that advice about 15 years ago and in the
interim you have treated us to a panoply of minor characters from wacky
Jewish landladies to be-turbaned Sikhs. Even if, at this late date, you
decided to finally take his advice you could have just had Anthony move
to Quebec with his wife and daughter and write him out of the strip.
Just
be honest with yourself and everyone else. The only reason you have Liz
and Angsthony together is because you want them together. It's not
because Sparky told you back in 1992 that you have too many characters
or because the world needed to see what it looked like when two dead
halibut kiss, it's because the thought of these two toddling off into
the sunset together makes you squee."
