(For the Deeply Superficial Blog-A-Thon.)
I have been obsessed with the fashion in the movie Clueless for years. I did a fashion design competition in high school where I designed outfits that went with the movie, I wrote papers in college (design major) on it, and now, well, here we go again. This time, however, I'm covering what the guys are wearing.
Josh : "You look like Pippi Longstocking."
Cher : "Well you look like Forrest Gump. Who's Pippi Longstocking?"
Josh : "Someone Mel Gibson never played."
The fun thing about this movie's fashion is the balance between reality and unreality. Which is to say: the boys dress like guys we see on the street, and the girls don't. I admire the styles worn by the girls in the movie, but I certainly didn't see chicks dressing like that anywhere. Those thigh-length socks, plaid and blazers never really caught on in my real life, though they certainly made a statement in the movie.
But really, the fashion in it is to set the girls apart as being spectacular, since the guys are...not. This movie really emphasizes the clothing differences between the genders, particularly as to what is acceptable and what is not to wear coming out of your house in the morning.
Cher (who picks her outfits via a computer program) sums it up:
"So okay, I don't want to be a traitor to my generation and all but I don't get how guys dress today. I mean, come on, it looks like they just fell out of bed and put on some baggy pants and take their greasy hair - ew - and cover it up with a backwards cap and we're supposed to swoon? I don't think so!"
This was true when the movie came out in the 90's, and well...the fashion is not too different today. I was very amused a few months back when I found an article called "Getting Hyphy at UC Davis", which clearly featured an accompanying photo (not online) of two fellows who had obviously never been NEAR this town. They had styled hair, they had on leather, and whether or not you liked their outfits, clearly they had taken some time to pick them out when they woke up in the morning. I saw this and thought, "Who are these people? They don't live here." Guys here are wearing flip-flops, manpris even in 30-degree weather, an Aggie Pack shirt they got for free when it was thrown at them, and have the greasy hair and backwards cap. Every. Day.
Man, I hate the greasy hair and baseball caps. Has any girl ever found them attractive unless they are being worn at a baseball game, preferably by a baseball player? I know half of you are covering up your bald spots, but sheesh. They have no style. You blend in with every other schmuck in the clothes he rolled in wearing last night. They SMELL. Oh, and by the way, when your hat nearly bends in half and has holes in the brim, IT'S TIME TO GO GET A NEW ONE.
The sad thing is, dressing like a slob in your nasty baseball cap and sagging manpris has yet to... NOT get them women. Why is that?
Because your options are limited when you're a straight girl, that's why.
"He does dress better than I do, what would I bring to the relationship?"
One of the sad things, fashion-wise, in the movie is that the only fellow who knows how to dress is, of course, gay. The second-best male dresser in the show (if we ignore the Persian Mafia, since all they do is talk on their cell phones in one scene) is Elton, who may be straight, but is the "snob and a half" character. Why? Because (decent) straight men are not allowed to have style. It's just not cool. And clearly the slobbiest guys in the movie manage to get all the hot women...well, I guess the women have to feel superior to them somehow. Other than that, let's hope their personalities work for 'em.
This makes me wonder: if the girl contributes the style in the relationship, what does the guy contribute? (Snarky comments? Skateboarding skills? Legal advice?)
Just remember this, guys: Really wanna woo a girl? She'll always appreciate you in a suit...even if she has to settle for a guy who dresses like a scrounge the rest of the time because only scroungy guys want to boink girls.
Oh, and be glad you've got good personalities, guys, because otherwise we girls would have doubts.
