Bad Prom!

So, the theme for the quarter's Craft Center party is Bad Prom. Something I have been dying to do for ages, believe me.

I went to the thrift store to look for a suitable dress to wear. And I have found one. It was the lone suitable candidate in the store. A lacy buttery yellow concoction that looks like it made a bridesmaid very unhappy, or an 80's girl very happy. Kinda like, "This could have been pretty, before it got so overdone..."

The one problem: despite it being tagged (by the manufacturer, not SPCA) as an 11/12- which is either one or two sizes BIGGER than I normally wear in anything- I can't fully zip it up the back.

I bought it anyway. It was too good to pass up.

I also found a screaming yellow "Class of 2002" shirt, which I *think* I'll somehow attach to the back to fill it up. Problem being, I dont have any idea how I'm going to do this whatsoever, while still being able to get INTO the dress and zip it up as far as it goes, and close attachments by myself in a bathroom stall before the event occurs. Here's what I want to do. Anyone have any suggestions as to how to do it? Buttons? Pins? Duck tape? It doesn't have to be particularly good or pretty or anything like that (it is a silly costume party).

I shall perservere, I guess. Somehow.

I think I need tons of gold glitter to go with this. I've already got gold shoes...

In other SPCA shopping, I now have:

(a) a "Reach for the Stars" shirt, which I think I should put together with my "Davis Sky Show" shirt into...something. Dress? The remnants of the 2002 shirt can fit in well here too.

(b) A "Celebrate Life With Ketchup!" sweatshirt, to make a cardigan out of. I'm just amused at the slogan.

And one other thing... In Generation T there's a T-shirt wedding dress, made out of 7 shirts or so and has ruffles and a train and stuff like that. The dress itself is not my style (never did like bustles, and see-through white shirt dress, ugh), but I like that idea of making a long dress out of shirts.

So I decided I was going to look for a bunch of black shirts (easiest to match colors on, eh? The gray is just to distinguish in Paint which shirt is which) and make something that combined the good dresses here on top with this skirt on the bottom. A shirt or two for the top, two shirts for the bottom length, and a contrast color for the diamond panels.

To that end, I got (all black, btw):

(c) A long-sleeved shirt that says "Off-Broadway" with a cityscape on one side and "Victim of Fashion" with a corpse on the back. It's got some lovely stainage below the middle, but I think I can use the logos as a tube top, at least.

(d) A Cold Stone Creamery shirt.

(e) A "Dog is my co-pilot"shirt

(f) A red KDVS shirt for the diamond panels. (Red because the previous two shirts have red in them.)

I'm excited to try working on this, though I won't get the time until next week.

On hiatus again.

My brand new camera of two weeks will no longer turn on. And I'm forced to ship it to the Midwest for repairs for God knows how long.

Waaaaaaaaaaah!

A little bit of color perks everything up.

For the final Whiplash, here's what I did with color:

I had a T-shirt from volunteering- "I Am An Honor Student At The Craft Center." I like the logo idea, but it's a gray shirt and thus boring. And too big. So I took some leftovers from my various tie-dye shirts and added them to this one. Different collar and sleeves, and I ruched the sides and put tie-dyed fabric in the laces.

Frit painting again.

It was not a good day of frit painting for me yesterday.

That's all I have to say about that.

Hopefully today's work will come out better.

Day 2, WEF, year three

Sorry I didn't get to posting this earlier. I may slap a photo of my booth up later...but yesterday I passed out early and barely managed to get the Whiplash entry finished(ish) and uploaded before the deadline.

Anyway, I made $168 in two days- Sunday was my better day once again! Best day ever, I think. Huzzah!

After having the aforementioned $5 conversation with the roommate, I dropped some prices on the second day. Most of the stuff that sold was $5 or $10 or $2 hemp, so... yeah, there you go. Interesting.

Roommate sold about $180 worth and got it all converted into cash to wave around triumphantly. I keep expecting him to break out into the Dance of Capitalist Superiority any second now.

Baby's first freeform

So, this week's whiplash theme was yarn. I had to use it as an excuse to try out freeform knitting and crochet, which I've wanted to do for awhile.

I bought a bunch of samples of various silly yarns for another project and put them together at random. I decided to make an arm cover because I'm allergic to the watch I'm wearing lately and have been wearing a wristband underneath it. However, my arm cover uh... morphed a bit in size.

And there you go. It's really bizarre to look at, but it was fun to make. I might add on longer and make it into a shrug or something.

Day 1, WEF, year three

I made $49 today. $25, $12, $10, $2.

I was pretty pleased to see that an orange necklace I'd made that day sold- I figured none of my orange stuff would go, but the girl really loved it. And two of my old pieces went, ones I thought should have gone last year. So, yay for that. I'm staying pretty chill about things, I've learned that there seems to be one "bad day" and one good day, so hopefully my good day will be tomorrow.

I did get kind of annoyed that people thought the girl next to me made all my stuff, though.

The happy thing is, I actually spent very little on this year's works (comparatively speaking) compared to my usual, so that's nice. Anything I sell is a bonus, plus it gets rid of some inventory. Because man, I have tons of inventory. I've been whining about how I didn't make much this year. Well, turns out I DID make a lot, it's just all pendants I didn't put into necklaces. So the booth's pretty loaded.

I gotta tell you a story: we're supposed to get to the booth around 8:30-9 to set up. Yesterday, my roommate (also working the booth) asked when I was going to leave and I said 8 a.m. He was all, "I don't have to get there THAT early, "

My roommate made over $100. This despite the fact that he got there an hour late and there was no room and thus he was set up behind someone else's booth. He made enough to pay for materials, but he griped that he only sold like $5 stuff. I find this kind of funny that he was griping that if he'd gotten there earlier, he would have sold MORE.

Tonight he was all, "What time are you going?"
"8."
"Okay then..."

More T-shirt projects (Part 3)

Dresses! We've got dresses!
The green one was my first dress, and much to my surprise, it actually fits. A friend and I thought it looked cool to leave the bottom hem on the boobs, but now I'm not so sure. I was going to put it up for sale, but um...I think I'll end up keeping it. It does look good.

The pink one, alas, does not. I had this idea to make a T-shirt dress by attaching a shirt to a skirt, but (a) finding shirts that matched enough was kind of hard, (b) I had to sub in some panels from the scrap bin instead of doing another redneck skirt with four panels, the way I wanted to, and (c) the empire cinching...

Well, when I tried the dress on, people were looking at me funny. I think i may just end up cutting this one up and redoing it differently somehow. The idea didn't work out.

And finally, there's the Exploratorium dress on the right, which I wore out in public yesterday and it looked lovely. That has some strips from the leftovers on the redneck skirt to make it a little longer/have more coverage. I like how it looks with the column motif. I think it's my favorite thing I made so far here.

More T-shirt surgery projects (Part 2)

These two are going up for sale. I'm not sure why I bought the monkey shirt on the right- other than the monkeys, it's rather dull. I ended up taking the leftover sleeves and collar from the redneck skirt and adding it on to here. Now it's...slightly less dull.
On the left, I had two slightly overly stretchy shirts of the same size. I did this pattern from Generation T where you're supposed to pin the two sides together. I was going to sew them up, but... the shirt doesn't even close if you sew the middles up. I ended up putting in laces in instead and I can barely get it on. So...that's up for sale too.

More T-shirt surgery projects (part 1).

On the far left, we have my first pair of shorts made from a T-shirt. It took a bit of resewing to get the legs to taper, but eventually I got them to look decent. I put laces/cinches in the legs because I have a pair of workout shorts with a cinch up each side, but I wanted cinches on all sides of the knees. I also put pockets into it, but made them too small. Something to keep in mind for next time, because I want to try making another one of these in black.

Then there's the cow-tipping shirt, which I made into a miniskirt with ties hanging off like udders. That's going up for sale (not my style at all, but it was fun to make).

On the right, I did an Empire-waisted T-shirt from Tease. It doesn't actually look all that cute on me somehow, so it'll probably go up for sale.
