First, I attemped to crochet a top hat. It did not go well. I should probably have felted it, but I don't trust the washing machine. So what I did instead was to go out and buy a hat and then put the crocheted cover over it. It fit almost exactly, I only had to add some extra on to make it go over the brim (see first shot).
Then I crocheted a brim for it. I had to decrease every 6 stitches for the second through fourth rows to make it fit right.
Yes, it's a bit stupid to crochet a cover for the hat, but I'm doing it to put stuff on it in an easier-to-attach way. I have two possible hat decorations for it. One is a patch...
